One of the main attractions and most attended places in Armenia is the Art Gallery. It was opened in 1921 and today represents one of the richest museums in the world. His extensive collection of Armenian, Western European and Russian art has more than 19,000 exhibits. In 1922, for the formation of a new museum, here were transferred the valuable paintings from the collections of the richest libraries in the world: the Hermitage (St. Petersburg), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow). From the Echmiadzin Monastery to the museum have been transferred collection of Armenian art of the 17-18th centuries. In addition collection of the Lazarevs, who founded the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages in Moscow, enriched the Armenian Museum with Armenian and Russian paintings. The museum has a special department dedicated to the art of Armenian painters, living abroad. Their works, which reflect the cultural traditions of the country where they live, imbued with nostalgia and memories of their homeland. In addition, here one can see the landscapes of Isaac Levitan, Mikhail Vrubel drawings, portraits of Victor Borisov-Musatov. In the Gallery exhibited first-rate examples of Western European paintings. The museum has 8 sections, which begins with the opening of the picture of Mystery Marriage of St. Catherine from the picturesque school of Lorenzo Di Bichchi. The museum also includes collection of Italian painters: Leonardo Bassano, Giovanni Hercynite, Benvenuto Garofalo, Bernardo Strozzi, Giovanni Tiepolo, and works of another Italian artists.
