Surg Gevorg Church

In the old part of town, on the central market square, which in the past was called Meydan, is situated one of the oldest monuments of Armenian religious architecture - the Church of St. Gevorg. In the historical sources it is often referred to as the Great Fortress Church, as well as the Church of the Holy Virgin. Name Great Fortress she got to distinguish it from the so-called Little Fortress Church, bearing the named of Holy Archangels, which was located at the same street, just a few steps away. Despite the fact that in the next century in Tbilisi was built many magnificent churches, the Church of Surg Gevorg was always the most important and visited in the city. For centuries it served as the seat of Haghpat eparchy. In 1114, on the church assembly in the Sev Kar, Haghpat monastery was included in the four seats, with the consent of which Catholicoses of Armenian Church were elected .
